How to: Replace the power supply.
Solution:
Remove the computer cover, and unplug the power cables to the internal components. Remove the power supply from the metal sides of the computer. Insert the power supply, connect P8 and P9 to the mainboard, connect components, power up, and make sure POST completes successfully.
CAUTION 1: Replacing a power supply should be performed by a qualified computer technician.
CAUTION 2: Do not attempt to disassemble or repair the power supply unit; simply replace it.
1) Unplug the power cord from the outlet and remove the power cord from the computer.
2) Disconnect all external components, including the monitor from the computer.
3) Remove the computer cover.
4) Locate and disconnect the power leads that connect the power supply to the motherboard.
5) Draw a diagram of the color-coded wiring from the power supply to the power switch for future reference.
NOTE: There are usually 5 wires: 1-ground, blue, black, brown, and white.
6) Disconnect the wires to the power switch.
7) Locate and remove screws securing the power supply to the computer.
8) Lift the power supply out of the computer.
CAUTION: Be careful not to snag any other cables or boards.
9) Test the new power supply before installation.
a) Make sure the new power supply is a compatible with the computer and motherboard.
NOTE: Some computers use proprietary cases and motherboard designs which require a specific type of power supply.
b) Make sure the power supply is not connected to anything and that the switch is in the OFF position.
c) Plug the power supply into an electrical outlet and turn on the power.
d) Listen for the fan operation.
e) Turn off the power supply and disconnect it from the electrical outlet.
f) If the power supply does not work, replace it with one that works before installation.
10) Insert the power supply into the computer and use screws to secure it in place.
11) Connect the power supply leads to the motherboard. Some force is necessary to connect the power leads.
CAUTION: Be careful not to use too much force.
NOTE: Standard power supply leads consists of a pair of rectangular plastic connectors with 5 wires apiece. The leads are commonly marked 'P8' and 'P9'. Each lead is keyed to fit onto the motherboard connector one way. When properly connected, the black wires in both power leads will be aligned with each other.
12) Connect the power connectors to all of the internal components.
13) If the power supply uses a remote switch, connect the remote switch using color-coded wiring diagram from the power supply to the power switch as a guide.
14) Reconnect all external components to the computer.
15) Make sure that the computer is turned off, and attach the power cord to the back of the computer and plug the other end into an electrical outlet.
16) Turn the power switch ON.
17) Make sure the fan is functioning and the computer boots properly.
18) Make sure each device is connected (e.g., disk drives) and operates properly.
19) Replace the computer cover.
